How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last?

Are you on the fence about getting semi permanent eyelash extensions, but you aren’t sure how long they will last? Eyelash extension lengths can vary depending upon the type of products that are used during application and also the type of aftercare that they are given.

Generally speaking, most eyelash adhesives have a bond time of 6-8 weeks such as this one here: Eyelash Adhesive

However, the length of your lash extensions will depend upon the growth cycle of your natural lash.  Your natural lashes go through 3 stages of growth which we will explain in this blog, so seeing some natural lash loss is all part of the normal growth cycle.  When your natural lash separates due to its growth cycle, the lash extension should still be attached.  Here are the types of growth cycles that your lashes go through.

How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last

Anagen phase:  The anagen or growth stage is when the lashes are actively growing. It lasts between 30 and 45 days. When eyelashes are in this phase, they do not fall out unless it is intentionally pulled or torn out. Approximately 40% of the upper lashes, and 15% of the lower lashes are in this stage at any time. Each lash will grow to a specific length and then stop. Since the lashes are new in this phase, they may be too fragile to lash. They can be recognized as smaller lashes that are growing and getting stronger.

Catagen phase: The catagen stage is known as the cessation of growth or transition stage. During this stage, the lash stops growing and the hair follicle begins to shrink. When an eyelash falls out or is plucked out at this stage (unnaturally), it will not grow back right away.Once the hair follicle has completed this stage it will move on to the next phase.

The catagen stage takes anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks to complete. A good way to recognize this stage is when the lash is at its peak, usually in length and health.

Telogen phase: The telogen stage is also called the resting stage. It can last over 100 days. During this period, hair does not grow, but remains attached to the follicle while it stays in a resting stage. When pulling out a hair at this stage, you will notice a “root” or a small white ball at the end of the lash. This is an indication that the hair has shed from the actual follicle in this phase. After this stage, eyelashes will either fall or be pushed out by new lash growth. Because of this growth, it is normal for a few eyelashes to fall out almost every day. It can take anywhere between 4-8 week to completely replace an eyelash!

It is this natural growth cycle that makes it so a fill every 3-4 weeks is recommended for Classic lashing and 4-5 weeks for Volume lashing.

Remember that it is normal to lose 1-4 lashes per day as natural lashes move through the eyelash growth cycles.  Each eyelash is in a different stage, and with extensions some may stay on weeks but it depends on the phase that they currently are in.

There are many steps to assist in prolonging the life of your lashes, such as using sealers.  Eyelash extension sealers form to the bond of the adhesive and lengthen the life of your extensions.  Most are recommended for daily use such as this one here: Sealer

In addition, proper cleansing of your lashes will help to keep them clean and remove excess oils from make-up or surrounding skin areas.  Facial oils can break down the bonds and integrity of the extension and can cause early extension separation. Here is an example of a cleanser with make-up remover for daily use: Lash Cleanser
